Genndy Borisovich Tartakovsky (born Gennady Borisovich Tartakovsky, Russian: Геннадий Борисович Тартаковский) is a cartoonist made famous for his first project, Dexter's Laboratory, and is the creator of Samurai Jack and Sym-Bionic Titan. Born in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, he came to the U.S. as a child and when he was a young man, he studied at CalArts to learn animation.
Before working at Cartoon Network, his first job in animation was on an episode of Tiny Toons Adventures (the show that would later succeed to the Animaniacs). His first job at Cartoon Network was on 2 Stupid Dogs (created by Donovan Cook) and since the has been one of the pioneers of Cartoon Cartoons (others include Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, John R. Dilworth, Danny Antonucci, Max Atoms, David Feiss, Van Partible, and so on).
Genndy also helped out on The Powerpuff Girls, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Star Wars: Clone Wars (not related to the 3D animated series), and Duck Dodgers. The most recent show he made for Cartoon Network is Sym-Bionic Titan, which he proclaims to be "the most challenging project I have ever done." He wanted to do a second season, but CN cancelled the show because it "didn't have enough toys connected to it."
Other than shows, Genndy is also involved in movies. He served as an animation director in The Powerpuff Girls Movie and How to Eat Fried Worms. And in 2012, he made his thearetical debut as dircetor with Hotel Transylvania, a film which centers around Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler in a strong accent) as he manages a hotel for monsters for his 118 year old daughter, Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez). He then made a sequel of Hotel Transylvania.
After the programming of Samurai Jack that ran on Cartoon Network ended from 2001 till 2004, he was planned on making a Samurai Jack film, however, because of the lackluster performance of the Powerpuff Girls Movie, the idea of a Samurai Jack film has been scrapped.
He attended Comic Con 2016 where he pitched the show.[1]
Currently, he is working out on the new season on Samurai Jack who will continue as director, writer, storyboard artist, producer, and executive producer and he will continue making films, returning as the director of Hotel Transylvania 3.
