Time Portal

Jack falls through Aku's time portal, leading him to the far future.

Time portals are magical gateways into the past or future, and are major plot devices throughout the series. Jack has been seeking one since the beginning of his quest to return to the past and then destroy Aku once and for all so that the bleak future never come to pass. The most notable ones are the the Lizard Monks' portal and the Guardian's portal.

Most time portals seen in the series resemble a large circle with black and white rings alternately. The one that the Guardian guards resembles a pillar of blue light and the time portal in the episode Episode XIV: Jack Learns to Jump Good, is of a blue and white circles. Some magical items such as the Crystal of Cagliostro, the Gems of Cronus, the Desert Oasis Jewel and the Well of King Ozric are capable of opening a time portal. Some time portals may appear at a specific time only and then close once and for all.

History

The origin of the time portals is unknown, though they may be anomalies produced by the world. They have appeared in some episodes.

Currently, all time portals that Aku is aware of were being destroyed, causing Jack to succumb to intense frustration and costs him his sanity, as he believes that he is now doomed to wander the bleak future forever.

However, eventually, with the help of Ashi's powers of time travel, Jack traveled back to his time and destroyed Aku, preventing the world and the universe from ever being ruled by Aku's tyranny. It can also be presumed that the time portals would never be destroyed by Aku in the future.

The Guardian's Portal

In "Jack and the Travelling Creatures", Jack fought against the Guardian to enter the portal. However, Jack was subsequently defeated by the Guardian. After Jack was defeated, the Guardian stated that Jack wasn't ready and the portal showed a vision of an older version with Jack with a huge beard and wearing a crown. However in episode C, Aku has destroyed the Guardian's time portal and the Guardian seemingly slain, although his remains except what was left of his glasses at the base of the time portal, were nowhere to be seen.

Unlike many others, the Guardian's time portal is only reserved for the use of the prophesied person that will defeat him. The time portal is also sentient and capable of communicating to the Guardian telepathically, telling him to spare Jack as he is the prophesied one. Given that Aku has destroyed both the time portal and its guardian seemingly, it is unclear how this prophecy will come to pass and how it will fit the entire Samurai Jack plot.
